Fact vs. Opinion

Posted by Matthew Berman On November - 1 - 2006

So it seems no one on the Internet (specifically digg) can tell the difference between fact vs. opinion anymore. I know I shouldn’t care what anonymous people say about my posts, but some of the comments are just plain uncalled for. Obviously I am not going to post malicious comments towards me on my own post, so why does these hateful people still decide to write such comments? I am not saying people shouldn’t have their own opinions on what I write about, and I would gladly post oppositions to my opinion, but there is a way to say your opinion and a way not to.

I notice that a significant number of people using digg are like this. They automatically think everything everyone says on digg is pure fact and that they are 100% wrong and need to be corrected in the most malicious way possible. RELAX! If you read the comments from my last post, some of the stuff said is just ridiculously aggressive. In addition, do these people writing these comments realize that they might actually be wrong about something? Is that possible?

My last post seemed to generate a huge amount of horrible comments. Do the people who write these comments realize that I never said my last post was fact? I thought I was clear about the fact that it was my opinion. This is a blog, not CNN.com for God’s-sake! Those illegal activities are what I used to do on the Internet. This may very well be different from what you used to do. Someone wrote a disgusting comment towards me because I said AOL dominated the Internet back in the ’90s. This was 100% true in my experiences and with every one of my friends’ as well. AOL in my opinion opened the gate for non-savvy computer users to get their first experiences with the Internet. Not everyone has to agree with this, it just comes from what I remember of the Internet in the ’90s.

Now I know this article won’t convince these people to stop writing such hateful messages, but I just needed to get this off my chest. I won’t mention this again and I will be deleting any such messages (so please don’t waste your time writing page long hate messages). Again, I have no problem posting the comments people write that don’t agree with me, but that are still written in a constructive manner. My previous post was 90% opinion, and was written to make people say, “oh do I miss those good old days.” It was written to remind people how simple the Internet was not more than 10 years ago.
