Bootup: No More Windows Splash Screen

Posted by daronarnold On November - 30 - 2006

Windows XP has many little tweaks and tricks you can do to make your PC just a little better. Here’s one that will have you saying “Go Speedracer, Go!” You know that Windows XP splash screen you see when you turn on your computer…well, you don’t need to sit through that anymore, so let’s get rid of it so you can search for porn that much faster. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Click on your Start Button
Click on the Run
In the browser box, type: MSCONFIG
Click OK
Click the BOOT.INI tab
Check the /NOGUIBOOT box
Click Apply, then OK
When it asks you to restart, please do so.

And wa-la, no more Windows XP splash screen. Make sure you check back soon ‘cause we’ll tell you the quickest way into Scarlett Johansson’s pants.

AMD v Intel

Posted by Quinn Zerfas On November - 29 - 2006

If you walk into any computer retailer to pick up a new desktop or laptop, one of the first questions you should be asking yourself is “Do I get a computer with an AMD processor or one with an Intel processor?”

But even before you can even ask yourself that question, you would need to know the benefits to siding with one processor over another given your specific computing needs. Some people are going to tell you it doesn’t matter, and others might say Intel is better because they are number one in sales and have been around the longest (assuming that’s a viable answer). Neither of those however even resembles a thought out decision.

Let us compare AMD’s Athlon 64 X2 4800+ to Intel’s Pentium Extreme Edition 840 Dual Core in five different benchmark categories; Gaming, Photo Editing, MP3 Encoding, Multitasking, and Day-to-Day tasking.

Gaming: In testing Half Life 2 on a screen resolution of 1024×768, it was found that the AMD was performing at 140.6 frames per second while the Pentium was only clocking in at 106.3 fps. This is unfortunately a 10% difference that Intel needs to play catch up on.

Photo Editing: For this one of the most common tasks done was tested, Cropping. For this Photoshop was used and was tested to crop a relatively large image file down to a size appropriate for websites. Once again AMD took the prize finishing its task in 146 seconds leaving Intel to come in ten seconds later. Now a lot of us might think 10 seconds isn’t that big of an issue, but it will matter to the person who is making a living out of it.

MP3 Encoding: This is another common task that is possibly even more common these days than photo editing. For this test Apple’s iTunes was used because it is a multithread application programmed to utilize multiple processor threads. This could be a little embarrassing for Intel given their chip is ripping an album in 2 minutes and 12 seconds while AMD had already finished in 1 minute and 50 seconds, a good 20% faster than its competitor.

Multitasking: For this test two relatively rigorous processes were used. First McAfee was set to do a virus scan on 40 gigabytes of data. At the same time (of course) the computer was told to encode 85 megabytes of video to DIVX. Much not to my surprise AMD finished up in 3 minutes and 15 seconds while Intel dragged its proverbial fat ass at 3 minutes and 31 seconds. Not the biggest victory for AMD, but things are starting to look clearer.

Day-to-Day Tasking: Last but nowhere close to least is the run of the mill Microsoft Office and web browsing that every Dick and Jane is going to do. I’m actually sorry to say AMD takes this test as well. I would have liked Intel to have something to show for itself. But according to BAPCo SysMark ratings just gets things done a little bit faster than the Pentium.

Now there are a lot more selections the Athlon 64 and Dual Core families have to offer, but if you were going to be choosing between these two processors, you read something like this and then you see the price tags: AMD $725 and Intel $1175, what would you choose?

The bottom line is there are going to be minor differences here and there with any competing chips, unfortunately all the differences here are in favor of AMD which leads me back to believe what I always have, Intel is overpriced because they have the top spot. There’s no other real way to justify a $450 dollar difference for chips that do the same thing. This could be the reason why you now hear rumors of Apple in talks with AMD so quickly after putting Dual Cores in their machines. But until that’s official its mere speculation, but it would be a logical move given the stats. So whether you are buying a new computer or building one from scratch, I’d suggest going with AMD. It’s going to perform better and cost you a lot less. Win-Win.

How Much Is Your Blog Worth?

Posted by Matthew Berman On November - 26 - 2006

My blog is worth $14,678.04.
How much is your blog worth?

Ever wonder how much your blog is worth? Well, this cool little applet powered by Technorati. I got this from this website.
The calculation is based on many things including link popularity and traffic. The number below is my blogs worth, almost $15,000 isn’t bad but compared to other blog sites, it’s nothing. Hopefully we can get that number up higher. For some reason I don’t think this number is completely accurate. The dollar amount is based on Tristan Louis’s research, which is based on a link to dollar ratio like the AOL-Weblogs Inc deal. So if you have your own blog you want to check out, just click the link and enter your URL. Comment the number to this post and everyone can compare numbers.

DLP TV + PS2 Horror Story

I was just talking to my friend who told me about a horrible story about his DLP television. He has a Samsung 56in DLP television, which he purchased a little over a year ago from Costco. A few days ago his friend went to his house and brought his ps2 over to play. So they plugged it in and was surprised by a loud noise and then the TV turning off. He tried playing around with it for a while but just could not get the TV to turn back on. All he heard was a very weird noise coming from the back of the television. He then decided to look in the manual to find out that there is a warning against plugging in a ps2 into the TV. Apparently the ps2 and the Samsung DLP TV don’t work with each other, and actually breaks the TV when it is plugged in.

He was able to return the TV after the warranty was up (thanks to Costco) and got a plasma instead. This has to be the most ridiculous problem I have ever heard. How would just plugging in a ps2 absolutely render a $2000 TV useless? Good job on that one Samsung.

Cool Gmail Trick

Posted by Matthew Berman On November - 24 - 2006

Here is a very nice Gmail trick I found on precharge.net. Check it out.

——————————————————————————————————————
Use Gmail to Generate Unlimited E-mail Addresses:

Gmail has an interesting quirk where you can add a plus sign (+) after your Gmail address, and it’ll still get to your inbox. It’s called plus-addressing, and it essentially gives you an unlimited number of e-mail addresses to play with. Here’s how it works: say your address is pinkyrocks@gmail.com, and you want to automatically label all work e-mails. Add a plus sign and a phrase to make it pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com and set up a filter to label it work (to access your filters go to Settings->Filters and create a filter for messages addressed to pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com. Then add the label work).

More real world examples:

Find out who is spamming you: Be sure to use plus-addressing for every form you fill out online and give each site a different plus address.

Example: You could use
pinkyrocks+nytimes@gmail.com for nytimes.com
pinkyrocks+freestuff@gmail.com for freestuff.com
Then you can tell which site has given your e-mail address to spammers, and automatically send them to the trash.

Automatically label your incoming mail: I’ve talked about that above.

Archive your mail: If you receive periodic updates about your bank account balance or are subscribed to a lot of mailing lists that you don’t check often, then you can send that sort of mail to the archives and bypass your Inbox.

Example: For the mailing list, you could give pinkyrocks+mailinglist1@gmail.com as your address, and assign a filter that will archive mail to that address automatically. Then you can just check in once in a while on the archive if you want to catch up.

Rocket Scientist Breaks INTO Prison

Posted by Matthew Berman On November - 22 - 2006

I found this story on thefreshscent and thought it was hilarious. Apparently this genius rocket scientist (yes a real rocket scientist) decided to break INTO a prison where his brother was being held to deliver drugs and other items to him that he could sell. The brother had snuck over an 8ft tall fence into the HMP (Her Majesty’s Prison) Kirkham facility.

Apparent he planned on giving the drugs to his brother and then sneaking back over the fence. Instead, while trying to climb back over, he was spotted and arrested. His goodies were also found in a trashcan, which his brother was supposed to pick up. This all sounds like a plot from Prison Break. Looks like he will be joining his brother now, maybe he’s not such a genius after all. So what was all this effort for you ask? Here is the list of goodies he tried to deliver:

1) Heroin
2) Weed
3) 18 DVDs
4) Steroids
5) 3 liters of vodka
6) 3 bottles of Southern Comfort
7) 3 bottles of Bacardi
8) 80 cigarettes
9) 2 mobile phones
10) Calling cards
11) Phone chargers

New WoW Ad (Feat. Office Space Scene)

Posted by Matthew Berman On November - 22 - 2006

I played World of Warcraft for just about two years before finally quitting (and i’m still looking to sell my 2 level 60’s). I still do love that game and with over 6 million users, I think everyone else agrees. I just uploaded this video to Dailymotion (I love Dailymotion more everyday) from the Blizzard website. Here is the new WoW commercial from, which features a hilarious scene from Office Space. However they integrated their content into this commercial, was genius. It looks like part of the movie. Check it out.

The Most Hardcore Snake Ever!

Posted by Matthew Berman On November - 22 - 2006

Wow. Just wow. This video shows why these animals are one of the oldest living creatures. Taken off a Spanish news channel, this video shows what happens when you mess with an enormous 20+ foot anaconda. The snake looks to be Yellow anaconda, which are found in South America. Personally, I really find snakes fascinating, and I currently have a Kenyan Sand Boa (only 1.5 feet right now) My still small boa barely eats full sized mice. Never in my life have I seen anything like what this snake does. Not only does it swallow a baby HIPPO, but it regurgitates the entire thing back up. Watch as the men coerce the snake into giving back its dinner. If you are squeamish in any way I suggest not watching this video.
